What to expect | Lisa Yates Physiotherapy | New Plymouth

What to expect during the consultation

During the initial appointment Lisa will ask you about your concerns and what you would like help with. She will then ask you questions about your symptoms and your past medical history. This will likely include questions about your bladder, bowels and/or any sexual difficulties. She may then look at things such as your posture, pelvic position, muscle strength or length. You will be given a thorough explanation of the findings and treatment plan. I use lots of diagrams and models to help ensure you better understand your body and the specific condition/s affecting you. You should have time to ask questions at the end.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral?

No. While many patients will be sent by their GP or specialist, a referral letter is not required.

What if I have my period when my appointment is scheduled?

As long as you are comfortable then please still attend your appointment. This is a common occurrence and one we can easily deal with.

Will I have to do an exercise programme?

In most cases you’ll be given some printed written information to take home and also a detailed home programme. This often involves exercises designed to specifically strengthen or relax the muscles involved.

Will I need an internal examination?

If your symptoms involve your pelvic floor region, we may request permission to do an internal examination (this is usually vaginal for women and rectal for men). This is the best way to check the strength or your pelvic floor muscles and look for areas that may be causing symptoms. This will only be done on adults who give their permission.

How often will I need to be seen?

In most cases, a follow up appointment (usually 30 minutes) is made in 2-4 weeks after the initial assessment. At your follow up appointment, I will answer any questions you may have, look at your exercises and hopefully progress your programme further to help you achieve your goals. Depending on your condition and your progress, you may require a further treatment or two.  My aim is always to help you reach a level of independence so you won’t require ongoing treatment.

How do I make an appointment?

The easiest and fastest way is to book your appointment is online. At busy times of the year it may take 3-4  weeks to get an appointment.

If you would prefer, you may call Lisa on 021123 0679. Please leave a message and Lisa will return your call ASAP. If you feel you require an urgent appointment due to severe pain and/or pregnancy then please make this known to Lisa. You will be asked for your contact details and we will forward you an appointment confirmation email.  This may include a new patient registration form.  For your convenience we will also send a text reminder 48 hours before your appointment.

Will my consultation be confidential?

Confidentiality is assured. You can be assured that Lisa will treat you with respect and professionalism. All the information you share will us is completely confidential and will not be discussed with anyone else unless you have given us permission to do so (e.g: your GP or referring specialist)
